A Journey on a London Bus

Say you're a native from a colony of the visiting the utopian Capitol of the Empire. How can you travel from one institution to another in a polite, efficient and civilized manner? Why, a journey on a London bus is the answer, of course. Produced by the British Colonial Unit's propaganda arm, this piece high-lights why London's traffic is some of the finest traffic in the world. Still, at least the black students did not have to sit in the back of the bus unlike their American counterparts.

Animation / Propaganda: So They Tell Me - circa 1919

So They Tell Me, circa 1919, skewers the top headlines of its day, the World War I era.

Crude animation attempts to punctuate the sardonic and off-color humor supplied by political raconteur Warren W. Brown(?). Though the jokes are somewhat esoteric by today's standards, the tone straddles between bombastic entertainment and nativist propaganda.

Targets include labor activist Eugene Debs, Prohibition, the League of Nations, the Wobblies, Russian & German instability, the Bolsheviks, and fat women in bathing suits and burnt Christmas pudding.

An interesting snapshot of the mood of the US during the war at the beginning of the last century, WWI.

Drugs / Propaganda: Flowers of Darkness - A History of the Poppy

Flowers of Darkness is an unflinching, no-nonsense look at the opium trade - where it happens, how it is transported, and it's ultimate effects on the world community. With footage direct from the fields of Afghanistan to the streets of the ghetto, the reach and power of the poppy was as powerful in the early 1970's when this film was made, as it is now, with the comeback of the Taliban fueled by the bumper opium crop of 2006.

Propaganda: Early 1970's Euro Modernity

To the tune of Mozart’s A Little Night Music, we take a tour through the height of modernity in early 1970's Central Europe. This observational documentary about electricity and technology is quite artfully shot for an industrial film. A look at how modern Prague appeared in the early 1970's.

Drugs / Propaganda: The Terrible Truth - 50's anti-drug film

In this Cold War era anti-drug film, the point is, if you smoke marijuana, you are destined to become a heroin addict, just like Phylis. Sticking to the principals of red-scare tactics, a Harry Truman-like, hard-nosed narrator leads us through a cautionary tale, where once you start, you are forever a member, just like the commies.

Shot in color in early 1950's Los Angeles.

Classic lines include, "They both 'smoked pot.' That's Jive talk for marijuana." ... Brilliant!
